Indian textile designs, long celebrated for their intricate patterns and vibrant colours, are now making waves on international fashion ramps—from Paris to New York. At Punjab Agricultural University (PAU), Ludhiana, first-year BSc (Hons) Fashion Designing students recently got a hands-on taste of this rich legacy during a three-day mega workshop on “Textile Decoration Techniques,” organised by the Department of Apparel and Textile Science recently.
Led by Bindiya Jain, a master trainer from Pidilite Industries Pvt Ltd, Ludhiana, the workshop immersed students in the transformative world of fabric art. From tie and dye with fabric paints to wet painting, freestyle techniques and decorative button construction, the sessions offered a deep dive into the creative possibilities of textile decoration.
Students learned how to turn plain fabrics into expressive, value-added pieces—be it for clothing, home décor or accessories.
“The moment I dipped my brush into fabric paint, I felt like I was creating something truly personal,” said Simranpreet Kaur, a participant. “It’s amazing how a simple piece of cloth can become a canvas for self-expression.”
The workshop, coordinated by teaching assistant Manisha Sethi, was designed to spark innovation and encourage experimentation. Students explored various methods of applying colour, layering textures and constructing embellishments—skills that are essential for modern fashion designers who wish to blend tradition with contemporary aesthetics.
“I never imagined fabric painting could be so versatile,” shared another student. “This experience has opened up new ideas for my future collections.”
Dr Harminder Kaur Saini, head of the department, praised the students’ enthusiasm and creativity. “These techniques not only personalise garments but also empower designers to tell stories through their work. It’s heartening to see our students embrace both heritage and innovation.”
As the workshop concluded, the students proudly displayed their creations—each piece reflecting a unique blend of imagination and skill. In a world where fashion is increasingly about individuality and sustainability, the PAU’s budding designers are learning to craft garments that are not just stylish, but meaningful.
