Odisha is poised to emerge as a major hub for the garments and textile industry, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi announced on Wednesday while inaugurating a large-scale apparel manufacturing unit by Page Industries in Ramdaspur,Cuttack district.
The newly established unit, built with an investment of Rs.750 crore, has already created over 5,800 jobs for young people, the Chief Minister said. Page Industries has also laid the foundation for another unit in Bhubaneswar, worth Rs.258 crore, expected to generate 3,500 employment opportunities. In addition, the foundation stone for a textile plant by MAS India Clothing Pvt. Ltd. was also laid by the Chief Minister in Bhubaneswar.
Highlighting the government’s focus on employment generation and women empowerment, CM Majhi said, “The garment and textile sector requires comparatively less capital investment but provides significant employment, especially for women. We are committed to establishing more apparel industries across Odisha.”
Large-scale textile and apparel industries are now coming up in Khordha, Cuttack, Ganjam, and other districts. Last July, Odisha received textile-related proposals worth nearly Rs.7,800 crore, which are being implemented at a rapid pace.
The Chief Minister described the inauguration of these projects as a “golden chapter” in Odisha’s industrial development. He noted that while multiple industrial projects worth nearly Rs.41,000 crore have been inaugurated in Khordha district alone, the new apparel unit will further strengthen the state’s textile and garment sector.
“Our goal is to transform Odisha into the ‘Surat’ or ‘Tirupur’ of Eastern India,” Majhi said, emphasizing policy reforms and an industry-friendly environment that leverage the skills of Odia artisans.
The state government is also providing essential infrastructure – including land, electricity, water, and transport – through ‘plug and play’ apparel parks, making Odisha an attractive destination for investors. The textile sector is expected to attract Rs.7,212 crore in investment and create 40,000 jobs, the Chief Minister added.
Odisha Industries minister Sampad Chandra Swain highlighted that industrial development is key to generating employment, while also supporting the growth of MSMEs (Micro, Small, andMedium Enterprises) that will benefit local youth.
Textile, and Handloom minister Pradeep Bal Samant said the textile industry is ushering in a golden chapter for Odisha’s industrial growth, reinforcing the state’s potential as a manufacturing hub.
