To bolster the recycling industry in Panipat, stakeholders are actively engaging with key figures. Following his recent visit to Panipat, Union Minister of Textiles Giriraj Singh met with Parvinder Singh and Harshit Kakkar, the founders of the Global Alliance for Textiles Sustainability (GATS), based in Panipat.
GATS, a leading organization dedicated to sustainability, focuses on promoting recycling and circularity within the textile sector. The meeting centered around the potential of integrating recycled yarns and fibers into the mainstream textile and apparel industries. It also highlighted the creation of affordable, sustainable textiles while generating significant job opportunities, particularly for women.
Parvinder Singh proposed the establishment of an Indian recycled cotton brand mark, similar to the globally recognized Woolmark. This certification would position India as a pioneer in sustainable textiles, improve customer trust, and provide a distinctive identity to recycled fibers. Singh also discussed including recycled yarns in the National Handloom Development Corporation’s Yarn Subsidy Scheme.
Harshit Kakkar emphasized the Minister’s strong commitment to promoting such initiatives, which also aim to create respectful employment opportunities for women in the textile sector. Additionally, he noted that the development and use of mixed cellulosic fibers could increase farmers’ incomes. GATS reiterated its support for the Minister’s vision to make India a global leader in circularity and sustainable textiles.
