In a bid to reduce reliance on raw material imports from China and promote local textile manufacturing, the Uttar Pradesh Government is set to establish nearly a dozen private textile parks across the state. These parks will be part of the Uttar Pradesh Textile and Garmenting Policy 2022, with planned locations in districts such as Gorakhpur, Mau, Bhadohi, Aligarh, Baghpat, and Shamli.
The first private textile park, Lonex Textile Park, will be developed in Shamli district with an investment of approximately Rs. 726 cr. Spanning 27 acres, this facility will house 17 production units for weaving, dyeing, printing, and garmenting, creating 5,000 direct and indirect jobs. The park is expected to be operational by December 2025.
India’s textile industry is projected to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 8.9% from 2023 to 2032, with the domestic textile and apparel market anticipated to double from $165 billion in 2022 to $350 billion by 2030. Against this backdrop, Uttar Pradesh is positioning itself as a key textile and garment hub in South Asia, leveraging traditional textile centers like Varanasi, Lucknow, Bhadohi, Gorakhpur, and Kanpur.
Alok Kumar, Principal Secretary of UP Handloom and Textile, highlighted that these parks would not only enhance local production but also reduce dependence on Chinese raw materials. Additionally, the parks are poised to benefit from disruptions in the textile sector in Bangladesh, where political unrest has caused the closure of nearly 1,000 small and medium-sized textile units.
As part of the national goal of achieving $100 billion in garment exports over the next five years, Uttar Pradesh is strengthening its textile value chain. Under the PM Mega Integrated Textiles and Apparel (PM Mitra) scheme, the state is also developing a mega textile park across 1,162 acres in Lucknow and Hardoi. With an investment of around Rs. 10,000 crore, this park is expected to generate 300,000 jobs and accommodate approximately 400 manufacturing and processing plants, with major companies like Reliance Industries, Arvind Mills, Vardhman, and Ahuja Textile Mills set to establish units there.
The textile sector is one of the largest employment generators in Uttar Pradesh, and the government’s efforts to bolster this industry through strategic policy interventions aim to further solidify the state’s role in India’s textile and garment export growth.
