Georgian textile firm Tiflis Textile has opened a new sock knitting facility in Tbilisi, the country’s capital. The constriction of the 2 mn euro plant, which has included the installation of a bank of the latest Lonati sock knitting machines, is part of the ‘Produce in Georgia’ programme. This involves the distribution of government grants and infrastructure support, both which are aimed at building up the country’s burgeoning textile industry.
The facility was officially opened recently by First Vice Prime Minister of Georgia, Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development Dimitry Kumsishvili along with the newly appointed Head of the Enterprise Georgia, Mikheil Khidureli. Tiflis Textile aims to product men’s, women’s and children’s socks for both the domestic and export markets. “The Tiflis Textile products will in demand at the local market as the socks are of highest quality,” Kumsishvili said. “However, the production is also exportoriented, which will certainly have a positive impact on our tax balance and will bring more foreign currency into the country.” Initially, the factory will provide 50 jobs with more likely to be added as capacity is increased.
