Lederer Elastic Yarns and Shieldex, a manufacturer of metallized textiles, have partnered to create a series of wrapped yarns that have applications in compression wear and socks as well as technical textiles. Shieldex Wrapped Yarns are designed to offer new ways and approaches in the field of technical textiles, while it was previously not possible to dye silver-plated yarns; the wrapping process offers many new possibilities for wrapping dyed yarns with Shieldex’s electrically and thermally conductive as well as antimicrobial yarns.
Shieldex yarns can even be used to wrap an elastic core, which was specially developed for elastic applications, with possible applications including home textiles (bedding, towels) and apparel (shirts, socks, sports compression). Also under development is a textile coaxial cable whose inner conductor is wrapped in a protective outer conductor, shielding it against interference radiation.
“With an elastic core yarn, our Shieldex yarn becomes a stretchable multi-talent. Specially developed for elastic fabrics and applications, this yarn can revolutionize new developments,” Shieldex says. “The already textile and flexible attributes of the conductive yarns is extended and improved by the elasticity and is therefore the perfect threaded for elastic fabrics such as jersey, sweat, cuffs and many more.”
Shieldex silver-plated yarn can also be easily wrapped around dyed cotton yarns, coloured polyester yarns and many more. The silver-plated yarn with its 99.9 percent pure silver is not directly affected in the dyeing process and it can therefore be used for almost all dyed yarns without losing any of its positive properties.
