BGMEA has called on Chittagong Custom House to cooperate in resolving the customs related issues of garment industry. A delegation of Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) led by BGMEA President SM Mannan met with Commissioner Mohammad Faizur Rahman at Customs House Chattogram office on May 15.
The meeting discussed the complications and challenges existing in Customs related services, including issues related to clearance of imported woven fabrics and shipment of goods ready for export, problems with weight, documentation problems and complications related to HS codes during clearance of imported goods.
The BGMEA President emphasized on simplification of business processes including faster and easier customs related services, speedy clearance of imported raw materials, machinery and equipment to run the overall operations of the garment industry seamlessly and smoothly.
He said that the cost of production of the garment industry increased while dealing with the challenges faced by customs in the export-import activities of the garment industry. This also results in unnecessary delays in business processes.
SM Mannan said that to remain competitive in the global market and to ensure sustainable growth in the industry, the government’s policy support in this sector is very necessary.
He also said that in this period of global economic recession, the production cost of the industry is increasing even though the global demand and cost of clothing is decreasing. In this situation, to survive in the global competition, the customs processes have to be simplified, faster and hassle-free.
At that time, Customs Commissioner Mohammad Faizur Rahman said that Customs House Chattogram is working diligently to ensure a favorable business environment for the sustainable growth of the garment industry. He said that the recommendations of the BGMEA delegation would be seriously considered.
