Italian yarn manufacturer Filmar has partnered with flat knitting technology Shima Seiki to advance the supply of high quality yarns to the knitwear sector. The two main initiatives in place are the new ‘R&D Sample Box’ and the participation of Filmar in Shima Seiki’s innovative Yarn Bank platform.
The collaboration between Filmar and Shima Seiki has led to the creation of the R&D Sample Box, a project that Filmar says symbolises a journey into yarn innovation. The box is divided into two sections – Research and Development. The Research section explores original processing, innovative colour effects and 3D special aspects, while the Development section focuses on bold processing with extreme weights and techniques that push the boundaries of textile creativity.
“The R&D Sample Box is not only an example of manufacturing collaboration, but also a source of inspiration for designers seeking to push the traditional boundaries of knitwear,” Filmar said in statement. The yarn manufacturer also says that its membership in Shima Seiki’s Yarn Bank represents another key pillar of this partnership. The Yarn Bank is an online platform that serves as an interactive database for yarns, offering designers and knitting companies easy and immediate access to a wide range of yarns, with complete details on composition, colour and thickness.
The platform is designed to greatly facilitate material selection, reduce the need for physical sample exchanges, and enable greater experimentation and innovation in fabric design.
“The collaboration between Filmar and Shima Seiki through projects such as the R&D Sample Box and the Yarn Bank not only elevates the technological and creative level of the textile industry but also strengthens the joint commitment to a more sustainable and responsible supply chain,” Filmar added.
“These projects demonstrate how technology can be used to improve the efficiency of production processes, promote sustainability, and inspire a new generation of designers to create innovatively and consciously.”
Elsewhere, Filmar has confirmed that its Egypt-based operation, Filmar Nile Textile, has achieved ZDHC advanced certification for its dyehouse operation.
ZDHC (Zero Discharge of Hazardous Chemicals) is a global initiative that promotes the use of non-harmful chemicals in the fashion industry. The goal is to reduce the environmental impact associated with manufacturing and ensure that every step in the process meets the highest standards of safety and sustainability.
The ZDHC Gateway platform provides access to detailed chemical and wastewater data, enabling companies to continuously monitor and improve their production practices.
“This achievement is not only a significant milestone for our company, but also represents an important step toward safer and more environmentally friendly apparel production,” Filmar said in a statement.
“The improvement process is continuous and requires constant effort. It is essential to stay abreast of ZDHC regulations and to work closely with suppliers to ensure that final products not only meet but exceed quality expectations, while always taking into consideration compliance with environmental regulations.”
