Vertically integrated apparel manufacturer SCM Garments has announced plans to build a new knitting facility in the central Indian State of Madhya Pradesh. Traditionally based in the Southern State of Tamil Nadu, SCM Garments, part of the Chennai Silks Group, says that the new plant could house up to 2,000 machines. Although no exact timescale has been given, it is understood that the plant could be operational within two years.
SCM operates a number of facilities across Tamil Nadu producing around 14 mn items for month for many of the world’s leading brands and retailers. it also has a plant in Ethiopia.
Established in 1989, SCM currently uses a wide range of the latest knitting technology Germany and Italy helping it creates rib, interlock and striper fabrics. It also uses Taiwanese machines for rib and wheel jacquard with lycra, Japanese collar knitting machines to knit all types of flat knit collars and machines from Singapore for single jersey fabrics with three thread conversion.
It also operates its own spinning plant running 28 combing machines, 45 ring frames and 20 Auto Coner machines. It produces mostly organic cotton yarns from counts Ne 20’s to Ne 60’s as well as yarn blends from counts Ne 20’s to Ne 50’s.
