Boston, US-based Ministry of Supply, which operates a bank of the latest Shima Seiki flat knitting machines, is continuing to push the boundaries of WHOLEGARMENT technology with the launch of a new 3D sweater collection. Shima Seiki has a long history of working with US-based knitwear designer Ministry of Supply going back to 2015.
It featured its first Ministry of Supply product in 2016 with the release of the 3D Print-Knit Jacket. Since then, Ministry of Supply has continued to push the envelope of innovative knits using WHOLEGARMENT technologies launching the 3D Print-Knit Dress later in 2017, and even a “Custom-Function” Thermal Sweater at their Pop-up at Santa Monica Place.
Since then, the design specialist has tested and launched various iterations of styles for both men’s and women’s utilizing Shima Seiki’s WHOLEGARMENT technologies. Recently, Ministry of Supply has released a new Women’s sweater called the “Women’s 3D Print-Knit Slouchy Sweater” which they describe as,
“An effortless easy cut built with a zero-waste seamless design, made from soft, sustainable Viloft viscose for the perfect balance of warmth and long-lasting resilient stretch.”
Knitted with highly elastic PBT yarn, wood-derived viscose and an innovative stitching to unlock the plush, the sweater offers a spongey softness that feels like a weighted blanket.
It also offers zero waste; traditional cut-and-sew typically leaves ~35% of fabric on the cutting room floor while 3D Print-Knit goes directly from yarn to garment, eliminating those scraps. And seamless knit patterns mimic traditional cuffs, hem and raglan sleeves for a unique look that won’t tear or blow out over time.
Unlike traditional knitwear, where each panel of front body, back body, and sleeves are knit separately and attached afterward, this Women’s Slouchy Sweater uses WHOLEGARMENT technology to three-dimensionally knit everything all in one piece. As the 3D Knitting technology doesn’t require any cutting or sewing, it is known to be the most sustainable form of knitwear. In addition, the product only uses the actual amount of yarn/material needed for the garment without waste, making it the ideal knitwear that is also friendly for the environment with zero waste.
